Signs worth investigating

Not every increase in water usage means there is a leak. Changes in household use, irrigation and pools can all affect your bill. But if the increase cannot be explained, it is worth checking for water escaping somewhere on the property.

How to check your water meter

Turn off taps and make sure water-using appliances, irrigation systems and other fixtures are not operating. Record the water meter reading, avoid using water for a period of time, then check the meter again.

If the meter has continued to register usage while everything was turned off, there may be a leak within the property's water supply system. When the source is underground, beneath concrete or otherwise concealed, professional water leak detection can help determine where the water is escaping.
